Key Messages for Adult Social Care Providers

Following on from the launch of the Better Lives Better Outcomes adult social care strategy and the event that took place in January below are some key messages we want to share with providers of adult social care.

Adult Social Care in 2017-18

The total gross spend for adult social care in 2017-18 was £129.028m with the spilt down as follows:

  • Older People - £46.083m
  • Mental Health - £20.266m
  • Learning Disabilities - £41.364m
  • Under 65s - £21.315m

A total number of 22,503 people contacted adult social care through the Nottingham Health and Care Point or hospital.

Strategic Intentions Common Themes

Based on the strategic intentions in the sections below there were some common themes that ran through learning disabilities, mental health and older people, these are:

  • Reduce the number of admissions to residential care
  • Focus on community connection, friendship and activity to enhance health and wellbeing
  • Work with providers who are committed to supporting citizens to gain confidence, independence and skills.

Strategic Intentions Learning Disabilities

  • Reduce the number of 1:1 hours
  • Shift from residential care to supported living for the first time all young people turning 18
  • Establish the Nottingham Pathway Service
  • Support citizens to access meaningful activities
  • Work with older Carers so that supported living is the preferred choice for citizens once they are unable to continue living with older carers at home
  • Work in partnership to achieve better outcomes for citizens
  • Focus on community connection, friendship, employment & activity to enhance health & wellbeing
Learning Disabilities

Strategic Intentions Mental Health

  • Develop value for money range of community based services to support recovery & maximise independence
  • Expectation is that people can regain skills & confidence & become more independent
  • Support people to access training opportunities to enable employment
  • Improve general health & wellbeing via increased social contact & friendship, activity, training & employment, income maximisation
  • Commission for outcomes not time & task
Mental health

Strategic Intentions Older People

  • Maximise the number of citizens benefiting from the Reablement service by developing a Personal Assistant register to ensure Direct Payments are a viable alternative to commissioned services
  • Increase the number of Extra Care schemes in Nottingham City & build on the support available within schemes
  • Reduce the number of admissions to residential care
  • Support providers to release homecare capacity where support is no longer required by existing citizens thereby enabling new citizens to access this
  • Work with providers who are committed to supporting citizens to regain confidence, independence & have improved health & wellbeing
  • Focus on community connection, friendship & activity to enhance health & wellbeing
