BEH - Further planning

The Children and Young People’s Behavioural and Emotional Health Team (CYP BEH Team) undertakes further work with the child or young person, their parents or carers, where it is not clear where children and young people’s needs are best managed. This may include further work for children and young people where there are concerns about possible ASD or ADHD.

Step 1: Plan

  • In some cases it may not be initially clear where children and young people’s needs are best managed.
  • The CYP BEH Team works with the pathway coordinator, the child or young person and their parents or carers to develop a support plan with outcomes in line with presenting needs.

Step 2: Implement

  • Interventions are delivered, which may include work from the CYP BEH Team or from universal or specialist services (e.g. CAMHS, paediatricians).
  • Pre-assessment work may be completed by the CYP BEH Team

Step 3: Evaluate

  • Appropriate time is allowed for the impact of interventions to be evaluated
  • The support plan is reviewed by the CYP BEH Team, in conjunction with the pathway coordinator, and interventions and outcomes are evaluated.

Support may then be complete and the child or young person supported to de-escalate to universal services OR the child or young person may be supported to access services from targeted or specialist services OR the CYP BEH Team may support the development of an ongoing support plan including further interventions and support from the CYP BEH Team.

Plan

Throughout the pathway the pathway coordinator remains key to ensuring that:

  • the stages of the pathway and support plans are coordinated,
  • the child or young person and their families does not have to unnecessary share repetitive information,
  • the child or young person and their family remain integral to all decision making.

Once a referral has been received by the CYP BEH team, the nurse specialists will meet twice weekly to discuss the complexity of the referral. The pathway coordinator may be contacted and discussions will include behavioural and emotional symptoms, social setting, and duration of difficulties.

For those referrals best placed to receive services from the CYP BEH team, a ‘choice’ appointment will be offered. The choice appointment forms an initial assessment and uses the CAF and Team Around the Child (TAC) frameworks. The aim of the choice appointment is to identify the specific needs of the child/young person.

A support plan will be made identifying the child’s or young person’s (and their parents or carers) goal based outcomes. Support plans will be varied, including direct work with the CYP BEH team as well as support from other services in Nottingham, which may include services for further assessment or more specialist intervention.

Implement

Support may include:

  • Undertaking pre-assessment work that may be required prior to a specialist clinical assessment and supporting access to a specialist clinical assessment;
  • Delivering parenting programmes which will include:
    • 123 Magic, a four-week course for parents of children up to 12 years
    • Cygnet, a six-week programme for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism
    • New Forest six-week programme offering two courses one for parents of pre-school children with ADHD symptoms (pre diagnosis) and another for parents of children aged 5-12 who have an ADHD diagnosis.
    • Sleep programme – a five-week parenting course for parents of children who have comorbidities of neuro developmental concerns.
  • Delivering one-to-one work with children over the age of we diagnosed with ADHD or ASD using evidence-based strategies that are recommended by NICE including cognitive behavioural therapy.
  • Supporting access to targeted or universal services and reviewing the effectiveness of this support.

Evaluate

After evaluation of interventions, next steps will be discussed with the child or young person and their parent or carer. The pathway coordinator will be involved with this.

The CYP BEH team may support access to specialist assessment for clinical diagnosis such as from specialist child and adolescent mental health services or paediatricians. The CYP BEH team will support children and young people and their parents/carers through this process.
