Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs)

We want you to know about our Mental Health Support Team in Nottingham City!

Our Mental Health Support Team (MHST) in Nottingham City is a special group of people who help others when they're feeling sad, worried, or not quite themselves. Our team has caring professionals who can talk to you and help you feel better. They're like superheroes for your feelings! If you ever need someone to talk to or feel down, you can ask a grown-up to find these teams to help you. It is important to remember that it's okay to ask for help when you are not feeling your best.

Our Mission in Nottingham City:

We are committed to working in participation with children, teenagers and their families to make sure they are part of decisions that shape the services they receive.

We are committed to teaching everyone to be aware of their thoughts and feelings and making sure that children, young people and families have a say in getting help and support.

We are accountable for gathering information about what happens to make sure we’re doing a good job in helping children and young people feel happy and healthy.

We ensure that our service is accessible for all, making it easier for young people to use our services and get involved.

We use Evidence- based treatments and plans that we’re sure are good at helping children and young people feel better.

More about us

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) in Nottingham City currently offers support across over 70 schools and colleges within the city.  This team is part of a project funded by the NHS to make sure that Children in both Primary and Secondary schools, as well as colleges gain timely mental health support they need and deserve.

MHST’s have three core functions:

1) They offer evidence-based support for mild-to-moderate mental health issues.

2) Educational Mental Health Practitioners (EMHP’s) and a team of specialist practitioners assist the Senior Mental Health Lead in schools and colleges to create or develop a whole school or college approach.

3) Provide timely guidance to education staff and connect with specialists to ensure children and young people receive the right support and stay in education.

What we offer – Information for Children & Young People

We offer interventions that have been shown to help support children and young people overcome difficulties with their mental health and wellbeing.  These may be offered on a 1-1 basis or with your parents/caregivers.

Most of our interventions use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a type of therapy that focusses on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviour and how these three things interact.

Here is a link which gives a nice overview of accessing CBT from the perspective of a young person. A film about Children and Young People's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Programme (CYP IAPT) by young people from Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Nottingham City Targeted CAMHS team and the Nottingham City MHST teams have been working together to develop video clips for Children and Young People and professionals around ways of coping with worry, problem solving, mood management, grounding techniques and other areas.
